How to Help a Parent Clean Out Over 44,000 Emails?

My mom recently brought to my attention that she isn't receiving any emails, which led me to discover that she's hit the 5GB storage limit on her email account. She's been getting notifications about it since January, but she didn't realize it. Now she's trying to go through her inbox and delete emails one by one, which isn't very practical given that she has over 44,000 emails piled up. Her inbox is a mix of important messages, cherished memories, and quite a bit of junk from the last 15 years. Understandably, she doesn't want to risk losing anything significant, especially with some messages linked to family we've lost. While I consider myself pretty tech-savvy, I'm unsure how to manage such a huge volume of emails. What strategies or steps could I suggest to help her sort through this mess effectively?

A good first step is to sort the emails by sender. You can start by deleting bulk newsletters and promotional emails all at once. After that, sort them by size to identify large emails taking up space due to attachments. Make sure to export or back up emails from important senders before making mass deletions, just in case!

You could also suggest sorting emails by size in descending order. Focus on the less important ones first—start deleting junk emails from those senders, and keep going until you hit emails that actually matter. For large emails that have attachments, download the attachments for safe keeping and then delete the whole email. Just be careful to not remove anything sentimental in the process!

If she's using something like Yahoo, you can sort by sender and delete in bulk. Once you open an email from a sender she doesn’t care about, select that email and scroll down while holding the shift key to highlight multiple emails for a quick delete. This method allows deleting several dozen emails at once!

Exactly! Plus, after decluttering, moving emails into specific folders makes it easier to manage her inbox daily.

Creating folders can make things much simpler. Set up categories like ‘Family,’ ‘Friends,’ and ‘Bills.’ Use rules to automatically sort emails from specific senders into those folders. Afterward, just go through the spam folder and delete everything in one sweep. Don't forget to empty the deleted folder to free up space!
