I've got a calibrated BenQ monitor that displays colors beautifully (Rec.709) when I connect it directly to my MacBook using HDMI. However, when I connect it through my USB-C hub, the colors seem off, and I notice weird contrast issues along with color banding in gradients. I'm wondering if the hub is compressing the signal since I thought digital signals aren't supposed to lose quality like this.

Some cheaper hubs use compression techniques like 'Chroma Subsampling' (4:2:2 or 4:2:0) to save bandwidth, especially at 4K and 60Hz. To get the best quality, make sure you're using a hub that supports full RGB 4:4:4.
I’m using a generic USB-C hub, any suggestions for brands or models?
Digital signals can be tricky! But yes, bandwidth does play a role. What version of HDMI does your USB-C dongle support? That might be the culprit.
This is a common issue! It usually boils down to needing a hub with more bandwidth. For the best results, a Thunderbolt dock is definitely the way to go.
