How can I help my elderly neighbor feel secure about his computer being hacked?

I have an elderly neighbor in his 80s who has been feeling very anxious and depressed because he believes that every computer he has owned for the last 30 years has been hacked. Currently, he has an older Windows desktop, but I'm not highly skilled with technology myself. I want to help him feel more secure and provide some relief. Are there any free or inexpensive software options I could run on his computer to help ease his worries? I appreciate any advice you can give!

He probably needs someone to gently guide him through what he thinks is virus behavior. Being understanding can help you figure out the appropriate software or cleanup tools to use for him.

You're right! He's alone and might just need someone to reassure him about security.

It sounds like a lot of his fears stem from a lack of understanding about technology. Educating him could be tough at his age, but maybe just demonstrating how things work can help ease his mind.

I was hoping that running some antivirus might help him feel at ease.

Honestly, if he's using Windows 7 or an even older version, it might be time to consider getting him a new machine or at least installing a more secure OS. Also, stressing the importance of using things like VPNs can help address his privacy concerns.

Thanks for the suggestions! I believe he just really needs someone to help him navigate technology.

You might try using free software like Malwarebytes Anti-Malware or SuperAntiSpyware. Just keep in mind that if his computer is older than Windows 7 or Vista, those programs might not work.

If he's using anything older than Windows 7, it's likely a security risk. Maybe consider upgrading his OS instead.

Have you thought about introducing him to a Linux operating system like Mint? It's user-friendly and can make his older hardware feel new again.
