What should I do if I accidentally received $2000 meant for someone else?

I recently found out that an old contact, whose number I don't have saved anymore, sent me $2000 by mistake. It wasn't meant for me but somehow came to my account. My auto payments recently went through, so I only have $540 left in my account. The sender told me to just send back what I have left and everything will be fine. They live nearby and have connections to my family, which makes me a bit anxious. Should I be concerned about legal issues or potential small claims actions?

This definitely sounds like a scam! If you did send any money back, there's a good chance you might never see it again. Usually, no one in their right mind just says, 'Oh, you can send back a quarter of what I sent.' That's a major red flag!

Seriously, don’t send anything! If this is a scam, anything you try to return might just vanish into thin air. Keep your money safe and let the sender deal with any issues through proper channels—this isn't your problem!

But what if they actually know me? They contacted some old friends to find me... Makes me a bit nervous.
