Thinking About Switching to Linux: Is It Worth It?

Hey everyone! I'm not very tech-savvy and am considering switching from Windows to Linux because I'm trying to reduce my reliance on Microsoft products, especially with all the recent changes happening with the company. I mostly use my computer for schoolwork and to play Minecraft. I'm curious if I'd be able to still use Microsoft applications like Word, Teams, and Excel if my school requires them. Also, is there anything else I should be aware of that could affect my decision? Any input would be appreciated since I'm really new to this!

While older versions of Microsoft Office might work on Linux, newer versions typically won’t without some extra effort. If your school requires Word and Excel, see if they accept alternatives like LibreOffice or Google Docs. Linux Mint is a good distro for newcomers, especially for your reasons!

Minecraft Java Edition runs smoothly on Linux! For Microsoft products, check if there's browser access for Word and Excel. Also, make sure to ask your professors about specific software you might need for classes to avoid issues down the line.

Definitely consider giving Linux a shot! You can create a live or bootable USB drive to test it out before fully committing, which is a great way to see how it feels for you.

Switching might require some time and research to figure out if Linux fits your needs. Microsoft products can work in browsers, and while Java works well, the native Bedrock client has some extra steps. Testing with a dual boot or USB can help you decide!

You can definitely access the web versions of Microsoft Office products, but if you need the full applications, Linux might not be the best choice for you. There are alternatives like OnlyOffice and LibreOffice, but compatibility isn't always perfect.
