Are Temp Spikes Normal When Launching Games on Ryzen 7 9850X3D?

Hey everyone! I recently upgraded from an Intel i7-7700K to a Ryzen 7 9850X3D and I'm trying to figure out if my temperature readings are normal or if I'm being overly concerned. Here's my setup:

- Ryzen 7 9850X3D (stock settings)
- ASUS ROG B850-A Wifi
- Arctic Liquid Freezer III 420mm AIO
- 32GB DDR5 6000 (DOCP enabled)
- RTX 3060 12GB

During normal gameplay, my temperatures seem fine, averaging around 55–65°C, and about 40–45°C while idling. However, when I launch games, I've noticed some brief temperature spikes:

- Call of Duty BO7 → up to ~76°C
- Sea of Thieves → ~71°C
- Hogwarts Legacy → ~80°C during loading/shader compilation.

After entering the game, temperatures drop back down to around 55–60°C and remain stable. I've also run some stress tests:

- Prime95 (2 min): ~80°C
- SilverBench: ~81°C
- Max recorded spike: 86°C (very brief)

My CPU boosts up to ~5.6 GHz without throttling or crashing. Coming from a 7700K, which had more stable temperatures, these spikes feel alarming. I have a few questions:
1. Are these short spikes during game launches normal for the X3D CPUs?
2. Is this typical Precision Boost behavior, especially during shader compilation?
3. Should I consider using Curve Optimizer for undervolting, or is it better to leave it at stock?

The temps settle well once I'm in-game, so I'm mostly just trying to confirm if these spikes are expected for Ryzen X3D or if I should look into remounting the cooler. Thanks for your insights!

You’re in the clear! Those quick spikes are typical, especially when launching a game where the CPU is pushed hard. It’s a good sign that the temps drop quickly afterward. If anything, consider how your AIO fan curve works—sometimes they take a moment to speed up when the load ramps up.

Right? It's all about the fans ramping up. My setup does the same thing when launching games.

Exactly, most CPUs are a lot quicker to react than the fans, leading to those short-lived spikes.

Absolutely normal. Higher-end CPUs tend to generate more heat, especially during launches. As long as the fans are working and you see stable temps afterward, you’re good to go!

Nothing to stress about! It’s expected behavior for modern CPUs like yours. Those spikes can occur because the CPU is working hard just before the game runs. And yes, a little undervolt with Curve Optimizer might help keep those temps even lower during normal operations, but the spikes may still happen.

Totally normal, nothing to worry about! The Ryzen 7 9850X3D can handle temps up to 95°C, so you're well within the safe zone. Those spikes are just part of how the CPU ramps up during intensive tasks.

Yep, that’s pretty common! The launch usually pushes the CPU as it compiles shaders and loads assets, which can lead to those short spikes. You're handling it well—just keep an eye on your power draw too if you're curious about any other factors.
