Hey folks,
I recently upgraded to a 5070ti GPU, and it's been a game changer, but I'm experiencing a strange FPS drop in specific situations that has me puzzled. For instance, when playing Resident Evil 9, I get around 110-120 FPS at 1440p with path tracing enabled in darker areas where my GPU is running at 85-90% usage. However, as soon as I step into brighter areas or go outside, my FPS can drop to 60-70, and GPU usage plummets to around 68% despite initially hitting 99% when I was in darker spots. My CPU usage seems stable at about 70-85%, which makes me question if it's a bottleneck since it never hits 90% or higher.
Could someone help me understand what's going on? I'm running driver version 591.86 and here's my build for context:
- CPU: 5800X
- GPU: 5070TI
- Storage: Gen 4 NVME
- RAM: 32GBs 3200MTs DDR4
Thanks in advance for any insights! If you need more details, just let me know!

Make sure to check your driver version too. Sometimes a simple driver issue can cause performance dips. If you haven't already, maybe post a screenshot from the NVIDIA app to be sure you're on the latest version.
Long shot, but consider disabling G-Sync and any overlays. Sometimes they can interfere with performance in unexpected ways. Make sure to completely turn them off, not just disable temporarily.
It's possible you're experiencing a CPU bottleneck without maxing out your CPU usage. Even with 8 cores, if only a few are being fully utilized, that can create a bottleneck for your GPU, especially with demanding tasks like ray tracing. Have you checked which cores are being used? It might be that some cores are overloaded while others are underutilized, leading to this FPS drop in brighter areas.
Thanks for the quick reply! I'm monitoring with overlays, and I see no cores above 85%. Could it still be a bottleneck, even if CPU usage isn't maxed out?

I mentioned it in my post; I'm on version 591.86. Thanks for the reminder, though!
