Is a Career Switch to DevOps Possible for Someone in QA?

I've been working as a Software QA Analyst in Canada for the past two years, focusing solely on manual testing, and I'm feeling a bit stuck both in my role and pay. I'm contemplating a career change away from QA and I'm curious if transitioning to DevOps is a viable option for me. I know it won't be easy, but I want to ensure my efforts won't go to waste. Given my background, can I realistically expect to find a job in DevOps? Is this the right move for me?

Don’t switch just for the money! If you're genuinely interested in systems, automation, and continuous learning, go for it! Embrace the challenge of learning new skills daily; the financial rewards will often follow as you grow.

Making the switch to DevOps from QA is totally doable! You already understand the software development lifecycle, which is a huge plus. You'll just need to get comfortable with infrastructure, automation, and CI/CD. Getting your hands on Linux, scripting, and deployment processes will really help you transition smoothly.

If in your QA role you’ve done some automation work—like writing tests in any programming language, integrating tests into CI/CD pipelines, or working with Docker—you could definitely make the jump to DevOps! But if all you've done is manual testing, it might be tough because DevOps requires a bit more technical understanding.

Start by automating parts of your current work! Whether it's automated testing, reporting, or email notifications, if you enjoy that process, it's a good sign you might like DevOps. Just dive in and see how it goes!
