I just made the switch to Linux (using Kubuntu 24), and I'm on the hunt for a lightweight screenshot tool to replace Greenshot, which I've relied on for years while using Windows. I've tried Spectacle, but it gets a bit cumbersome with features I don't need. I'm after a straightforward app that meets these specific requirements:
- Pressing the Print Screen key should give me a rectangular selection tool for capturing a specific area.
- While in selection mode, I can hit the spacebar to capture only the window currently in focus.
- Using Shift + Print Screen should let me grab the entire screen.
- The screenshot must be copied to my clipboard as a PNG and saved automatically in ~/Pictures/Screenshots/, organized into folders by year and month, with custom filenames.
- Importantly, I don't want any popups or the app itself to show during this process; it needs to operate entirely in the background without any distractions.
Is there an application out there that I can configure to work exactly like this?

I'm really curious why you're avoiding popups. Are you taking a lot of screenshots quickly? Anyway, I was thinking about Flameshot initially, but I remember it might not fit your no-popup criteria. Though, it can be set up to do what you want, it might require a lot of tweaking to get just right.

Decades of muscle memory! I take screenshots mainly to paste them into chats or to save for later, like for technical documentation. When I'm capturing specific workflows, I can't afford distractions from popups. I've organized over 20 years' worth of screenshots in a very uniform way, and I prefer to keep it that way!
