Hey everyone! I'm currently using Windows 11 but I've been thinking about making the switch to Linux. I really value protecting my privacy and I'm not a fan of the many annoyances that come with Windows. I'm hoping to get some advice on a few things:
1. I've heard that games don't run well on Linux. I use platforms like Steam, Xbox Live, Roblox, and Epic Games; will I be able to play those?
2. I'm planning to build a new PC soon, and I figured I could just transfer my current operating system over. Is that possible, or would I need to install Linux instead?
3. Will all my files, accounts, and apps be saved during this process?
4. Are there any beginner tips or essential information I should know before making the switch? I know it's crucial to check compatibility and pick a user-friendly version.

I get your concern about gaming on Linux—there's a lot of misinformation out there! I first heard it on TikTok too, and it really varies by game. Just test it out! As for your transition, many Linux distributions offer a 'live' USB option. You can boot from it without installing anything, which is a great way to get a feel for the OS first. It'll let you try it out without making permanent changes.
Most Steam games actually work on Linux! You can check out sites like ProtonDB to see which ones are compatible. Just keep in mind that some games, particularly those with strict anti-cheat measures, might not run. It's a good idea to look them up before you switch.
So regarding your new PC: if you want to keep your data, you can do that by putting your files on a separate drive. Just remember, your new OS would need to be installed on a different drive. If you boot up your old OS, you'll still have your accounts saved, but otherwise, they'll be gone once you switch. Make sure to back everything up before proceeding!

Thanks for sharing that! Testing it out first sounds like a smart idea. I definitely want to avoid any mistakes while switching.
