I recently bought an unlocked phone from an Apple store but ended up really disliking it and stopped using it after just a week. Unfortunately, I had to undergo surgery before the return window closed, and now that I'm fit to go back, I've noticed there's a scratch on the side of the screen. This scratch isn't something I felt while using the phone, and I only saw it when prepping for the return. I intend to bring my surgery documentation to explain my situation in hopes they might be understanding about my late return. However, I'm anxious that if they let me return the phone regardless of the scratch, and the scratch gets discovered later during inspection, that employee might get into trouble. I've considered getting AppleCare to fix the scratch before returning, but funds are tight right now. I truly want to return this expensive phone ASAP without putting anyone's job at risk.

Honestly, you shouldn’t worry about anyone facing consequences for accepting the phone return. Apple has fairly lenient policies, especially in cases of extenuating circumstances. As long as the scratch isn't significant, you’re likely to be fine.

Thanks! I’m really nervous about the whole thing, though. I’ve heard returns just get recycled. Is that true? And if they classify it as a hairline crack instead of a scratch, would it still be okay?
