How to Recover Lost Local Music Files After iPhone Backup and Restore?

I recently lost thousands of my rare local music files after performing a backup and restore on my iPhone 14 Pro. The situation started when I needed to replace my phone's battery and had to downgrade from the iOS 26 beta. I backed up my data to iCloud, got the battery replaced, and then restored from the backup. While most of my data returned, my local music files, including live concert recordings and rare tracks, are now grayed out and not playable. I had my Sync Library turned on, with the thought that any unmatched tracks would be uploaded to iCloud Music Library. However, they seem to be missing. My only remaining copies were on my now-dead NAS server, so this situation is really worrying. Apple Support told me they aren't a backup service and that sometimes data can be lost. Has anyone else dealt with something like this? Is there any way to force iCloud Music Library to re-download these files? Can I check what Apple has stored on their servers? I'm feeling pretty gutted about losing these songs.

In my experience, if you have unique or rare tracks, it's best to avoid enabling Sync Library altogether. If you ever disable Apple Music, those synced files might get deleted, which could be a huge loss if you didn't back them up elsewhere.

Ouch, that really sucks! The Apple senior advisor is right that they don’t provide backup services; it’s all about syncing. Unfortunately, your local files are your responsibility, so it's tough to recover them if they’re not in the cloud.

One possible workaround is to create a smart playlist in the Music app on your Mac that only shows songs in your iCloud Music Library. If you don’t see your files there and since your NAS is dead, you might want to consider replacing the NAS with a new one and putting the old drives in it for potential data recovery. Otherwise, professional recovery might be your best bet.

Your understanding of how Sync Library should work is mostly accurate. Local files not available in the Apple catalog are supposed to be uploaded to the iCloud Music Library. But it's critical to note that Apple's services aren't a reliable backup option, and sometimes things can get lost along the way. I always keep my private music files stored locally as well, separate from the cloud, to avoid issues like this. It's a good practice to maintain your own library.
