I'm in the northeast US and our workplace systems have been down for about an hour. The tech team mentioned it's a 'global technical issue' with Azure, but I can't find much information online to confirm that. Is there really a widespread problem with Azure at the moment, or is this just an excuse from our tech department for the issues we've been having with our backend?

I heard about some issues related to Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) in the central and eastern US. If your systems are linked to that, it could explain the downtime you're experiencing. Have you checked the Azure status page for any updates? Sometimes they take a bit to post about specific outages.
While I got a notice about some AVD issues, I was logged into it in East US and didn't experience any problems. It's strange that there aren't more reports if it’s a global issue, but you know how these outages can be; they don't always get reported right away.
