Is Upgrading My CPU Worth It for Better Gaming Performance at High Resolutions?

I currently have a Ryzen 7700 CPU paired with an RTX 4070 GPU, and I'm aiming to boost my gaming performance. I primarily play games at high resolutions like 4K and above, especially in VR. With GPU prices being quite high right now, I'm considering whether upgrading my CPU alone would provide any significant performance increase. How much could I realistically expect to improve my gaming experience by just upgrading the CPU?

You're not likely to see any performance gains from a CPU upgrade alone. The main exceptions would be competitive FPS games or simulation titles, where better CPUs can improve frame times. Otherwise, your GPU is where you should focus for a meaningful upgrade.

Honestly, you're looking at limited benefits with just a CPU upgrade. If you're playing at high resolutions, the GPU has a much bigger impact. If you’re considering upgrading, you might want to save for a better GPU instead, like an RTX 5080.

Upgrading just the CPU probably won’t give you any noticeable performance boost in games. Most titles won’t really benefit from it, especially if you're looking at high resolutions where the GPU typically does the heavy lifting.

I totally get that GPUs are pricey right now. I use the Nvidia app for graphics settings myself since I tend to tweak them a lot, and it can get overwhelming. Just be mindful that upgrading your CPU isn’t going to solve your performance worries at high res.
