I've recently switched from Windows 11 to Linux Mint Cinnamon 22.3 and started off feeling pretty liberated. The initial setup was smooth, and I got my essential software like Discord, Steam, and Spotify up and running quickly. But now, a week in, I'm feeling completely overwhelmed and burned out. Many of my Steam games won't launch, even though they show as Gold or better on ProtonDB. I've tried switching between Proton versions but had no luck.
On top of that, my Firefox keeps crashing, won't play videos, and now it only stays open for a couple of minutes. I've even reinstalled it! Discord crashed too, and Spotify is making annoying static sounds. Honestly, I'm feeling lost, and my tech skills are minimal. I dual boot with Windows 11 as a backup, but I really want to get Mint working without constantly having to switch back to Windows. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I think taking a break could really help! You don't want to troubleshoot when you're stressed. It’s totally okay to boot into Windows for a bit and enjoy some games. Have you made any driver upgrades recently? I’ve faced similar issues before, and sometimes the fix is to remove old drivers, clear shader caches, or even reinstall Proton. If things don’t improve, consider reinstalling Mint; it might actually save you some headaches in the long run.
Are you using the native Steam client or the Flatpak version? If it's Flatpak, make sure to run 'flatpak update' in the terminal to ensure your Steam gets the same NVIDIA driver version as the rest of the OS. I learned this the hard way, and it's crucial because software might not work properly with mismatched drivers.
Oh, I didn’t know there’s a Flatpak version of Steam! I can see how that might cause problems since applications that need deep system access usually run better with a native install.
I'm actually using the .deb from the website. The AI had me try the Flatpak version for a bit, but it was a hassle with needing to relog every time.
Sounds like you might be dealing with driver issues. Have you checked if you changed or updated any graphics or audio drivers? Mint comes with an app called Timeshift that saves your system setup regularly. If you have a backup from before these issues, restoring it could help—except for Steam games, of course. If that doesn’t do the trick, I’m here to help you find other solutions.
I haven't installed any new drivers. I did try Timeshift and went back a few days; Discord works again, but Firefox still has those annoying issues. I’m really anxious about Steam, though.
If gaming is crucial, you might consider switching to CachyOS or Bazzite. Those distros are more tailored for gaming, and I’ve found them much more stable than Mint.
I had my fair share of struggles with Mint too. I’d suggest trying something like Kubuntu—it’s one of the most user-friendly distros I’ve used, and everything just worked for gaming without issues. Hope that works for you!

I’m hesitant to reinstall since I feel like I'm putting a band-aid on the problem. I'm really trying to solve this once and for all.
