I applied for Amazon SES production access for my company and already verified the domain. It has been three days without a response. I included an explanation of our planned transactional and marketing emails, but the account is new and is still within the free tier. How long does approval usually take, and is there anything else I should provide to improve the chances of being approved?

Be very specific about how your application handles bounces, complaints, and unsubscribes. Explain the business and the exact sending workflow, and make it clear that recipients have opted in. For a brand-new domain, emphasizing legitimate transactional use instead of marketing may also help. Supporting business details or documentation can be useful if requested.
A new account can still be approved, especially when it represents an established, legitimate business. Account age alone is not necessarily a hard requirement, but the provider will want confidence that the sending activity is genuine and not intended for spam.
Approval times vary. Requests may be rejected quickly, while cases that require follow-up can take longer. A new account with little or no activity may also receive more scrutiny, so a few days of waiting is not unusual.
That makes sense. I was expecting them to ask follow-up questions, but I had not heard anything yet.

The business has been operating for about five years, which may have helped. We eventually received production access with a limit of 50,000 emails per day.
