Bazzite or SteamOS: Which Is Better for a First Linux Gaming Setup?

The bigger question is whether you want a console-like gaming interface or a normal desktop. Bazzite’s desktop edition gives you a regular Linux desktop alongside its gaming features. If you expect to use the computer for productivity, browsing, and creative work—not just launching games—you could also consider a mainstream desktop distribution such as Fedora KDE, Kubuntu LTS, or openSUSE. Proton works on essentially any Linux distribution, so that alone shouldn’t determine your choice.

I’m also fairly new to Linux and have been dual-booting Windows and Bazzite for about a week. So far, Bazzite has handled gaming, work, video editing, and general desktop use really well. Steam and Proton games have been running smoothly, and applications like LibreOffice and Kdenlive cover most of what I need. I’d recommend Bazzite for a beginner, while still keeping Windows around until you’re sure Linux works for you.

Bazzite is probably the safer choice for a regular PC. It has a proper installer, supports a wider range of hardware, and generally provides newer software. SteamOS is primarily designed around specific AMD-based gaming hardware, so it may not install or work reliably on a typical desktop—especially one with an NVIDIA GPU.

Both options aim to make Linux gaming easy, but hardware compatibility is the deciding factor. SteamOS is not officially intended for every desktop PC, whereas Bazzite is built for a much broader range of systems. Check your GPU first, keep Windows available for games with unsupported anti-cheat, and install whichever option best matches the way you plan to use the computer.
