What headset would work for daily use, work calls, workouts, and travel?

My boyfriend's birthday is coming up, and I'd like to replace his current headset because it's starting to fail. I don't know much about audio gear, but he uses headphones constantly—for work, the gym, relaxing at home, and going out. Since he may wear them for many hours a day, comfort and durability are especially important. Ideally, they would also have good call quality, reliable wireless connectivity, and enough sweat or water resistance for workouts. I'm not sure whether he prefers earbuds, on-ear, or over-ear headphones, or whether he needs active noise cancellation, so recommendations and advice on what details I should find out first would be appreciated.

For work, a headset with a proper boom microphone—such as a Jabra or Sennheiser business model—will generally sound clearer and more consistent on conference calls. For workouts and everyday errands, sport-focused earbuds or open-ear options such as Powerbeats Pro or Shokz may be more comfortable. A two-device setup could be better than forcing one headset to handle every activity.

If he dislikes earbuds or sweaty over-ear headphones, open-ear or bone-conduction models are worth looking at. Shokz-style headphones are lightweight, comfortable for walking and exercise, and let him hear his surroundings. The tradeoff is that they don’t deliver the same bass, isolation, or music quality as sealed earbuds or over-ear headphones.

There probably isn’t one perfect headset for every situation. Work calls, workouts, travel, and relaxing at home usually call for different designs. Before buying, find out whether he prefers earbuds or over-ear headphones, whether he needs noise cancellation, how important microphone quality is, and whether he wants water resistance. A gift card or a set budget with a planned shopping trip may be safer, since fit and comfort are extremely personal.

If he wants over-ear headphones, the Sony WH-1000XM5 or a comparable Sennheiser model would be worth considering. They have comfortable ear cups, strong battery life, active noise cancellation, wired support on some models, and useful companion apps. Just keep in mind that built-in microphones on consumer headphones usually aren’t as clear as a dedicated boom mic, especially in a noisy office.

For someone who wears headphones everywhere, compact earbuds such as AirPods Pro 2 or comparable Samsung Galaxy Buds are usually the most practical all-round option. They fit in a pocket, work well for walking and workouts, offer noise cancellation and transparency modes, and are convenient for calls. Over-ear models can sound better and be more comfortable at home, but they may feel hot or bulky at the gym.
