Should I replace my dead motherboard with a Ryzen 5600 platform or move to AM5?

My system has an Intel i5-11400, a B550M motherboard, and 16GB of DDR4 memory. The motherboard appears to have failed: the fans and fan lighting turn on, but the system never reaches POST. I'm having trouble finding a suitable replacement, and even H510 boards seem to be unavailable.

The cheapest solution would be switching to a Ryzen 5 5600 with a B550M board so I can reuse my DDR4 memory. The alternative is a more expensive AM5 build based on a Ryzen 7500X3D, but that would cost more than twice as much. I was considering using one 16GB DDR5 stick to keep the cost down.

I also have an RX 9060 XT 16GB graphics card and a Seasonic M12II 6210W power supply, and I mainly play at 1440p. Which route makes the most sense for this system?

AM5 makes more sense if you can comfortably afford the extra cost and want a future upgrade path. However, don’t build it with a single 16GB DDR5 module. Ryzen benefits from dual-channel memory, so use two matched sticks—ideally 2x16GB if the budget allows. One stick can noticeably reduce performance.

If you’re committed to replacing the platform, a Ryzen 5 5600 with a reasonably priced B550 board is the economical choice, especially since you already have DDR4. A higher-end AM4 gaming chip such as a 5600X3D or 5500X3D could also be considered if the price is close to the 5600, since it should perform better in games.

For 1440p gaming, the cheaper option is probably enough unless you’re chasing very high frame rates or plan to upgrade the graphics card soon. A discounted X3D-based AM4 chip could be a strong middle ground: much cheaper than a complete AM5 build while still offering excellent gaming performance.
