My girlfriend's son has been dealing with recurring gaming problems, and we're planning to work on his PC as a birthday project in the next week or two. His current system has a B450 Aorus Pro WiFi motherboard, a Ryzen 7 2700X with an air cooler, an RTX 3060 12GB, and 16GB of DDR4 memory. The graphics card and RAM will carry over.
The main issue is that some games, especially Project Zomboid, become glitchy and increasingly sluggish after about an hour. The computer does not shut down, black-screen, or crash completely, and restarting the game or rebooting the PC temporarily fixes it. This has been happening consistently for several months. The symptoms do not sound like a simple CPU-performance problem. If games become increasingly glitchy after an hour and a restart clears it temporarily, investigate the issue separately from the birthday upgrade. Check temperatures for the CPU, GPU, chipset, and VRM, monitor clock speeds and memory usage, test the RAM, inspect GPU drivers, and try running the affected game without mods. Also confirm that the power supply is a reputable model and that all power connections are secure. A clean operating-system install may be worthwhile, but it should not be assumed that a new CPU will fix the problem.
Keep the B450 motherboard and upgrade only the processor. Replacing the board just to continue using the same DDR4 memory would not add much value. A Ryzen 7 5700X3D is the strongest sensible upgrade for this platform if the budget allows, while a Ryzen 5 5600 or Ryzen 7 5700X would still be a major improvement over the 2700X. Update the motherboard BIOS before swapping CPUs, and verify that the BIOS version supports the processor you choose.
