How do I perform a truly clean iPhone install, and could it help with battery drain?

I've been dealing with severe battery drain on my iPhone 17. Battery life was fine on iOS 26.6, but the problem returned around the time iOS 26.6.1 was released, even before I installed that update. The phone sometimes lasts less than five hours, and I've seen 100% usage in about three hours, compared with the seven to eight hours I used to get consistently. Battery health is still at 98%. I've heard that setting up the phone as new without restoring a backup can fix issues like this. What's the correct way to do a clean installation, and is it likely to help?

A clean reinstall usually isn’t a fix for battery problems by itself. First check Settings > Battery to see which apps or system processes are using the most power, and look at the battery health details. If you do test a clean setup, make a backup first, erase the phone, reinstall iOS through Finder or Apple Devices on a computer, and set it up as new temporarily instead of restoring your backup. That can help identify whether the issue is caused by software or settings, but it won’t improve battery capacity or resolve a hardware problem.

Battery health shows 98%, but the phone sometimes lasts under five hours and can reach 100% usage in roughly three hours. It used to manage seven or eight hours consistently on iOS 26.6.
