I'm looking for a phone that gives me more privacy and fewer forced-in Google, Facebook, Instagram, AI, and assistant features. I've been considering options such as Volla, Jolla, Gigaset, Fairphone, PinePhone, and Librem, but I'm mainly focused on one practical requirement: I still need to use WhatsApp because many of my contacts rely on it.
I don't need mobile banking, gaming, email, YouTube, shopping, or much social media, and I browse only occasionally. My main goal is to avoid Google as much as possible while keeping WhatsApp available. Are there Linux-based phones that can run WhatsApp, either officially or through compatibility layers? What realistic options are available?

GrapheneOS may still be worth reconsidering. It removes Google apps and services by default, while allowing you to install only the components you actually need. You can use open-source alternatives such as NewPipe and Organic Maps, and get many other apps through F-Droid. WhatsApp may require installing the regular Android app, but GrapheneOS lets you keep it isolated and avoid giving Google control of the whole phone. It’s currently a more mature privacy-focused option than most Linux phone distributions.
Ubuntu Touch, Mobian, Droidian, and postmarketOS have some unofficial WhatsApp options, but support can be incomplete and may break when WhatsApp changes things. For the official Android app, one possibility is running Android inside Waydroid on a compatible Linux phone. Hardware support and setup difficulty vary a lot, so it’s worth checking the exact device before buying.
I’ll look into those options. Running the official app through Waydroid might be the most practical route if the phone supports it reliably.
