My co-founder and I recently started a small, pre-revenue tech company and are considering Microsoft's startup programs for benefits such as Azure credits, GitHub, and Microsoft 365. For anyone who has applied recently: Is the program still accepting applications and providing credits? Can a bootstrapped company qualify without investors or existing funding? How long did verification take, and what information helped your application get approved?

Investor or accelerator support can make the process easier because some programs provide referral codes or a faster path. That said, the exact requirements appear to depend on which Microsoft startup program you’re applying to. There is also a separate Azure-focused offering that may be available more broadly, while the main Microsoft startup benefits may be more closely tied to approved investors, incubators, or the Microsoft partner network.
It’s still worth applying, but the program structure and eligibility rules seem to have changed. The initial $1,000 in credits has generally been easy to obtain, while increasing the amount to around $5,000 can require additional business verification and documentation. Keep a close eye on your credit usage and provide complete, consistent company and contact details from the start.
The application process was relatively straightforward in my experience. The first credit tier was painless, and the larger tier took a few extra steps but was eventually approved. The management portals can be confusing, so expect to spend some time navigating them and checking that your credits are being applied correctly.

Do you know whether a referral code is required, or is it simply a way to speed up the review? I’m trying to understand whether a bootstrapped company can apply without one.
