I have an Acer Chromebook 516 GE (model CBG516-1H) and I'm trying to install Steam so I can use mods for a game. I haven't used Linux much, so I'm not sure where to start. I know the steps can vary between Chromebook models, and I'd like to know whether this model supports Steam through ChromeOS's built-in Linux environment or another method.

Check whether your Chromebook offers the official Steam gaming option in its settings. If it does, that’s generally preferable to manually replacing ChromeOS. If it doesn’t, the Linux environment may still work, but you’ll need to confirm that the game and its mod tools run properly on Linux. Also check the processor type in ChromeOS settings or the device specifications; Steam support is much less straightforward on ARM hardware.
That model uses an x86 processor, so it isn’t automatically ruled out like some ARM-based Chromebooks. Your first option is to enable the built-in Linux development environment in ChromeOS and install Steam there. Make sure you have plenty of free storage and realistic expectations—game performance, graphics acceleration, and mod support can vary inside the Linux container. Installing Linux natively is possible, but it’s more complicated and can cause driver or hardware-support problems, so I wouldn’t start there.

I’m not sure how to check the processor yet, but I’ll look in the settings and see whether the Steam option or Linux environment is available before trying anything more advanced.
