I'm currently running a Core i5-12400F, an NZXT Z790 motherboard, 32GB of DDR5, a Radeon 9070 XT, a CORSAIR RM850x ATX 3.1 power supply, a Hyper 612 Apex cooler, and an H5 Flow case with four additional fans. My CPU and GPU temperatures currently stay below 80°C.
I mainly use the system for gaming and would like a more powerful processor even though I'm not experiencing a major performance problem. Would the motherboard, power supply, case airflow, and current cooler be enough for a Core i7-14700K? Alternatively, would a 13th- or 14th-generation chip such as the 14600K be a better-balanced upgrade? I'm aware of the reported stability and degradation concerns with some 13th- and 14th-generation Intel CPUs and would update the BIOS and avoid unnecessary overclocking.

For gaming, the Core i5-14600K or 14600KF is probably the best match. It’s a substantial step up from the 12400F without producing nearly as much heat as the higher-end i7 and i9 parts. A 14700K can work, but your single-tower cooler may struggle with its sustained power draw, especially in heavier workloads.
The 14700K is compatible with your Z790 board and the 850W power supply should generally be sufficient for this setup. The bigger concern is cooling. I’d use a strong dual-tower air cooler or a quality liquid cooler, and make sure the case has good front-to-back airflow. Set Intel’s recommended power limits rather than letting the motherboard run unlimited power.
A 14700K or 14600K would both be reasonable upgrades, but the 14600K is usually the more sensible gaming choice. The 14700K’s extra cores matter more for rendering and other multicore work than they do for most games. Also check the motherboard’s VRM cooling and update the BIOS to a version containing Intel’s latest stability and microcode fixes before installing the new CPU.
That makes sense. I’m leaning toward the 14600K now since I’d rather avoid replacing the cooler unless the performance difference is genuinely noticeable.
