My current system has an RTX 3060 12GB, 16GB of DDR4-3200 memory, a Ryzen 5 3600X, an MSI B450 Gaming Plus Max motherboard, and a Corsair TX650M power supply. I mainly play single-player games at 1440p with medium settings. I'm fine with average frame rates, especially since DLSS helps, but I'm experiencing noticeable stutters and slow texture or model loading even though my games are installed on an M.2 SSD.
An AM5 and DDR5 upgrade is currently too expensive, so I'd like an AM4 processor that can last another four or five years. I'm considering a Ryzen 5 5500X3D for about €170 or a Ryzen 7 5800X3D for roughly €340, possibly alongside a memory upgrade. I can only afford either a CPU and RAM upgrade or a GPU upgrade this year.
Would the 5800X3D be worth paying twice as much in the long run, or would the 5500X3D provide most of the same benefit? Could upgrading the GPU to something like an RTX 5060 leave me with the same stutters and asset-loading issues because of the 3600X?

I’d choose the 5500X3D now, upgrade to 32GB of memory if possible, and keep the RTX 3060 until you can replace it later. A stronger GPU would improve resolution, settings, and average FPS, but it probably wouldn’t fix CPU-limited frame-time spikes or simulation-heavy scenes with the 3600X.
The 5800X3D is the faster and more long-term option, but at roughly double the price it doesn’t sound like good value for your stated budget. The difference is most noticeable in CPU-bound games, not necessarily in every 1440p single-player title.
For this situation, I’d prioritize the CPU upgrade rather than the GPU. A 5500X3D should offer most of the gaming benefit of the 5800X3D for much less money, especially at 1440p where the RTX 3060 is still likely to be the limiting factor in many games. The 5800X3D can be faster in CPU-heavy titles, but paying twice as much generally isn’t worthwhile unless the price difference is much smaller.
Make sure your B450 board has a BIOS version that supports the processor. Also, 16GB of RAM can contribute to stuttering in newer games, so moving to 32GB would be sensible. Prefer a matched 2x16GB kit rather than simply adding two more random modules.
