What are the best ways to get music onto a screen-free MP3 player?

I'm thinking about buying my daughter an MP3 player for Christmas, ideally one with very little screen use so she can listen to stories or music while falling asleep. The main thing I'm unsure about is where to get music as downloadable files rather than through a streaming app. I used to borrow CDs from the library, but our newer computer doesn't have a built-in disc drive. What legal options are available, and how would I transfer the music to the player?

Bandcamp is a good option for buying downloadable music directly from artists. Purchases commonly include MP3 files, which you can download to your computer and transfer to the player. Amazon also offers individual MP3 downloads, including music from many major artists.

A small external USB CD/DVD drive would solve the library-CD problem. They’re inexpensive, connect to the computer by USB, and let you rip the CDs into music files that you can copy to the MP3 player.

If you want children’s stories or audiobooks, also check your library’s digital catalog for DRM-free downloads or see whether the player supports library audiobook apps. Be cautious with random online converters: many are unauthorized, unreliable, or loaded with unwanted software.

Once you have the files, connect the player to the computer with its USB cable. It should appear like a storage drive, so you can copy the MP3 files into its music folder using File Explorer on Windows or Finder on a Mac. Check the player’s manual for supported formats and folder organization.
