My father found an old PC that still works. It has a 3rd-generation Intel Core i3, 4GB of RAM, and a 128GB mechanical hard drive. I tried installing Windows 10, but the system was extremely slow. Which Linux distribution and desktop environment would be a good choice for making this computer usable again?

Linux Mint with the Xfce desktop would be a friendly choice, especially if the user is coming from Windows. Xubuntu, Linux Lite, or Debian with Xfce should also run reasonably well on that hardware. Avoid heavier desktop environments if speed is the priority.

Whichever distribution you choose, back up any important files before formatting the drive. With only 4GB of RAM, keep expectations realistic: browsing with many tabs and modern applications may still feel limited, but a lightweight desktop should be much more comfortable than Windows 10.

An SSD would definitely help, but buying one may not be worthwhile if the goal is simply to keep this old machine usable. In that case, a lightweight distribution such as AntiX, Xfce-based Mint, or Lubuntu is the cheaper improvement.

MX Linux with Xfce is a good option if you want something stable, modern, and customizable. For an even lighter setup with a traditional desktop layout, Q4OS with Trinity or an Openbox-based distribution could work well. AntiX is another distribution specifically aimed at older computers.

The hard drive is probably the biggest performance bottleneck. Even an inexpensive SATA SSD would make startup and application loading dramatically faster, though the computer should still be usable with a lightweight distribution on the existing drive.
