I'm wondering how long this PC should remain capable for gaming and basic music production. The system has an MSI B660M-A WiFi DDR4 motherboard, 16GB of RAM, a Gigabyte RTX 3080, an Intel i3-14100F, three 500GB SSDs, and a 1TB hard drive. I'm considering upgrading to a 14th-generation i7, but I'm unsure whether the improvement would justify the cost with the rest of the system unchanged. Would an i7 make a major difference compared with the i3, or would upgrading the RAM be more useful?

A higher-end 12th- or 13th-generation chip may be worth considering if you find one at a good price, but check your motherboard’s BIOS support before changing CPUs. B660 boards can support newer processors with the right BIOS, though the exact upgrade path and power limits depend on the board. Don’t buy an i7 solely for the word “future-proof”—buy it if your current processor is actually holding back your games or workloads.
For gaming, the i7 probably won’t be a huge upgrade unless you’re playing CPU-heavy games, targeting very high refresh rates, or doing other demanding tasks while gaming. The RTX 3080 is likely to be the more important gaming component. For music production, extra cores can help with large projects and lots of plugins, but an i7 is not automatically necessary for basic work. Moving from 16GB to 32GB may be the more noticeable upgrade if you regularly run out of memory.
