I have an ASUS ZenBook UX310UQK that I'm currently running without a battery. It operates normally when connected to its charger, but I'm wondering whether heavy use—such as running many programs at once—could overwhelm the power adapter or damage the laptop. Is using it this way generally safe, and are there any precautions I should take?

Make sure you’re using a compatible, functioning power adapter that provides the correct voltage and enough wattage for the laptop. The adapter must power the computer under peak load by itself. If it is underpowered or failing, the laptop might freeze, reboot, or switch off during demanding tasks. Using the original adapter or a proper replacement is the safest option.
A battery normally helps smooth out brief power interruptions and provides extra power when demand suddenly increases. Without it, heavy workloads should still be fine if the charger is adequate, but avoid bumping or disconnecting the power cable. Save frequently, and consider using a surge protector or an uninterruptible power supply if unexpected shutdowns would be a serious problem.
It’s generally safe to run the laptop without a battery, especially since it already boots and operates normally from the charger. The main downside is that the battery can no longer provide backup power. If the charger is unplugged or the power goes out, the laptop will shut down immediately, which could cause lost work or file-system problems.

That makes sense. The old battery was swollen and causing random shutdowns, so leaving it out seems safer until I can replace it.
