Which CPU should I choose for a gaming PC with an RTX 5060: Ryzen 5 8400F or Ryzen 7 5700X?

I'm new to building PCs and am comparing two similarly priced prebuilts for gaming with an RTX 5060. One uses a Ryzen 5 8400F on the AM5 platform with 16GB of 4800MHz memory, while the other uses a Ryzen 7 5700X on AM4 with 16GB of 3200MHz memory. I've seen conflicting claims about their performance and keep hearing that AM5 is better because it offers a newer upgrade path. However, I probably won't upgrade the CPU for four or five years. If the rest of the specifications are essentially identical, which system would be the better choice for gaming, and does AM5 matter enough in this situation to justify choosing the 8400F?

The 8400F is an entry-level AM5 chip with limited cache, so it isn’t automatically faster just because it belongs to the newer platform. Its main advantage is the upgrade path: you could later move to something like a Ryzen 5 7600, 9600X, or a higher-end X3D processor. If you won’t actually make that upgrade, the platform advantage doesn’t help much.

Neither processor is a terrible match for an RTX 5060, particularly at 1440p, where the graphics card will often be the limiting factor. At very high refresh rates or in CPU-heavy games, the 5700X may perform better today, while the 8400F gives you access to newer AM5 CPUs later. Don’t rely on generic automated recommendations—look at benchmarks for the games and resolution you actually use.

If you truly don’t expect to upgrade for four or five years, don’t choose the 8400F solely because it uses AM5. The Ryzen 7 5700X is generally the stronger CPU right now and can make more sense at the same price, especially if the rest of the systems are identical.
