Is an RTX 3070 a good match for a Ryzen 5 5600 at 1080p?

I was planning to buy an RTX 5060, but its price has increased from about $410 to $510, which no longer seems worthwhile. I found a used RTX 3070 8GB for around $350, and it appears to offer similar raw gaming performance, although it lacks some newer features. My system has a Ryzen 5 5600 and a 120Hz 1080p monitor. Would the Ryzen 5 5600 limit the RTX 3070 significantly at 1080p, or would this be a good pairing for gaming?

A faster CPU upgrade is not necessary just to run the RTX 3070. A Ryzen 5 5600X3D- or 5500X3D-class upgrade could help in CPU-limited games, but the existing 5600 should already provide a good 1080p experience.

Several people have used this combination successfully at 1080p, and it is generally considered a good match. If a newer Radeon card such as an RX 9060 XT is only slightly more expensive in your area, it may be worth comparing because the extra VRAM and newer features could improve its long-term value. However, at $350, the RTX 3070 can still be a reasonable used-market choice if it is in good condition.

There will always be some bottleneck somewhere, especially at 1080p, but that does not mean the system is poorly balanced. In some CPU-heavy games you may not fully utilize the GPU, while in more demanding games the RTX 3070 will usually be the limit. Overall, expect performance in the same general range as an RTX 5060, with the trade-off being older features and only 8GB of VRAM.

That makes sense. I was mainly trying to find out whether the difference would be a few frames or something much more noticeable.

For most games it should be a relatively small difference, but CPU-heavy titles and very high-refresh-rate gaming can expose the limitation more clearly.

That combination should work well. The Ryzen 5 5600 is capable of driving an RTX 3070 in 1080p gaming, and you should not expect a major performance loss in most games. As always, the limiting component can vary by title and settings, but this is a sensible pairing.
