I'm hiring a systems engineer for a healthcare organization in Southern California. We usually post openings on Indeed, but my last hiring search produced few strong candidates. Where are you finding qualified IT candidates, and what hiring practices seem to work best? The role is based at a corporate office in Orange County, and the current salary range is around $110,000.

Staffing firms such as Robert Half can increase reach, although the fees can be significant. Other options include specialized technology job boards and employee referrals. The key is to clarify whether the problem is too few applicants, weak applicants, or good candidates being rejected during the interview process, since each issue needs a different fix.

Indeed and LinkedIn are still common starting points, but strong candidates may never see the posting or may get lost in automated screening. Put the opening on the company’s own careers page too, and make sure the application reaches the hiring team rather than being filtered entirely by an outside recruiter. Referrals and professional contacts can also work better than job boards.

Be upfront about the salary instead of using a vague range or “depending on experience.” Candidates want to know whether the role is worth pursuing, and California generally requires pay ranges in job postings. A detailed description with realistic requirements will also prevent HR from filtering out qualified people or advertising an unrealistic wish list.

Southern California has a large IT talent pool, so difficulty finding qualified applicants usually points to compensation, job requirements, or working conditions. Around $110,000 may attract junior systems engineers, but experienced candidates may expect considerably more, especially for an onsite healthcare role. A competitive remote or hybrid option could also broaden the pool.

Healthcare IT often has a reputation for high stress, limited support, and lower pay than comparable private-sector roles. If the position requires onsite work in Orange County, the offer needs to account for the commute and local cost of living. Improving the work arrangement, training, benefits, or salary may do more than switching job boards.
