I'm currently running an Intel Core i5-12600K with a Radeon RX 7900 XTX, but I'm hitting CPU bottlenecks in quite a few games. I'm considering an upgrade and would like advice on a processor that makes sense for this GPU. My system uses DDR4 memory, so I'm also wondering whether switching to a new motherboard and DDR5 would be worthwhile. I'd prefer a setup that runs at stable temperatures without requiring much manual tuning, since I haven't kept up with PC hardware recently.

A 14600K gives you a noticeable step up without forcing you to replace the motherboard and RAM. A 14700K is another option if you need more multicore performance, but it produces more heat and will need stronger cooling, so it may not fit your preference for low-maintenance temperatures.
The Core i5-14600K is probably the simplest and most sensible upgrade. It works with your existing motherboard and DDR4 memory, and a decent dual-tower air cooler should handle it without much trouble. It should also pair well with the 7900 XTX for gaming.
Since you already have DDR4, moving to DDR5 would mean buying both a new board and new memory. It can provide more upgrade flexibility later, but it usually isn’t worth the extra cost for this particular upgrade unless you’re also planning a full platform refresh. The 14600K on your current platform is the more cost-effective route.
