Is repeatedly charging my phone from 5% to 20% damaging the battery?

I have a strange charging routine: I usually plug my phone in when it reaches about 5%, charge it only to somewhere between 16% and 25%, then repeat the process. I rarely let it charge beyond 30%, except when I plug it in before going to sleep. Is this pattern harmful to the battery, or would it be better to charge it less often and to a higher percentage?

The bigger issue is letting the battery fall to around 5% so often. Lithium-ion batteries generally last longer when kept roughly between 20% and 80%. Charging only a few percent at a time isn’t ideal if it means you repeatedly reach a very low charge. Try plugging it in around 20%–30% and letting it reach closer to 70%–80%.

Short charging sessions aren’t inherently bad, but your routine creates unnecessary charging cycles and keeps the battery near a stressful low level. Charging to 80% and starting again around 20%–30% is a more practical balance. Charging to 100% occasionally is fine when you need the extra runtime.

Heat and deep discharges usually contribute more to battery wear than normal partial charging. Avoid letting the phone get very hot, especially while gaming or doing other demanding tasks during charging. Many newer phones also offer an 80% or optimized-charging limit, which can help if the phone stays plugged in overnight.

That makes sense. I’ll try charging it before it reaches 5% and let it get much closer to 80% instead of constantly topping it up.

You don’t need to obsess over an exact percentage. Phone batteries are consumable parts, and normal charging to 100% is acceptable when you need the capacity. Just avoid routinely draining it nearly empty, prolonged heat, and leaving it sitting fully charged for long periods if you can.
