I'm deciding whether to replace my ASUS TUF RTX 3080 12GB with an RTX 5080 or keep my current card until a future generation makes newer neural-rendering features more efficient.
My system has an i7-12700K, an RTX 3080 12GB, and a 32-inch 4K 240Hz OLED monitor. I'm comfortable with roughly 50–60 FPS in demanding games, including Crusader Kings 3, Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord, Total War, ARC Raiders, Dragon's Dogma 2, and Battlefield 6.
The RTX 5080 would offer higher performance, better ray tracing, 16GB of VRAM, and multi-frame generation. However, my main limitation right now is simply frame rate, and I'm generally satisfied with what the 3080 delivers.
What interests me more is DLSS 5 and its neural-rendering features. Early results suggest that these effects can have a significant performance cost at 4K, even on an RTX 5080. That makes me wonder whether the RTX 50 series is mainly an early adopter generation, while a future RTX 60 series could handle the technology more efficiently.
I'm concerned about upgrading from a 3080 to a 5080 now, only to want a newer card soon afterward. Would it make more sense to keep the 3080 and wait, or is the RTX 5080 already a worthwhile upgrade for this kind of 4K OLED gaming?

If DLSS 5 is the feature you’re most excited about, I’d wait. It appears to be more than ordinary upscaling, so enabling it can carry a substantial performance cost and may require multi-frame generation to maintain smooth frame rates. The current generation may support it, but a future card will probably provide a much better experience. I’d keep the 3080 unless it is actually preventing you from enjoying your games.
If your current performance is already acceptable, there isn’t much practical reason to upgrade. The games you listed generally don’t require extremely high frame rates, especially the strategy titles. Waiting lets you skip an expensive upgrade that may feel incremental outside of ray tracing and newer rendering features.
The 5080 makes sense mainly if you want higher settings, stronger ray tracing, or more consistent 4K performance today. Its value is less compelling if you’re already happy with 50–60 FPS. A future-generation card will almost certainly handle the newer features better, but you may be waiting until around 2028 and launch pricing could be high.
That’s the main trade-off: the 5080 is available now, while the next generation is still several years away and may not be easy to buy at launch.
