I built my PC around the time of the pandemic and think it's ready for a refresh. I'm interested in trying newer features such as DLSS 5, but I'm not upgrading solely for that—I'd like the system to handle modern games well for at least the next five years without major bottlenecks or performance drops.
My current setup is:
- Intel Core i5-9600K
- GeForce RTX 3060 Ti, upgraded from a GTX 1650 Ti about three or four years ago
- Dell 24-inch 1920×1080 144 Hz monitor
- 500W power supply
This setup can run heavily modded Cyberpunk 2077 fairly well, although I occasionally get brief stutters while parts of the city load. I'm planning to upgrade the monitor too, ideally for under $500, and I'd prefer not to overspend on unnecessary components. What parts would you recommend replacing first, and should I wait for the next generation of Nvidia graphics cards?

This is probably more of a platform upgrade than a single-part upgrade. The i5-9600K is getting dated, and a newer CPU, motherboard, and DDR5 memory would give modern games a much stronger foundation. Keep the 3060 Ti for now if it still meets your needs, then upgrade the GPU later when you can afford a worthwhile jump. You’ll also want to check whether the 500W power supply is high-quality and has enough headroom for future graphics cards.
If DLSS 5 is a major priority, waiting for the next Nvidia generation makes more sense than buying an expensive current card just for that feature. Older cards may support some newer technologies, but they won’t necessarily provide the same performance or feature set. Since your goal is broader longevity, build around a modern CPU and platform first, and choose the graphics card after the next generation and its pricing are clearer.
DLSS 5 isn’t the only reason for the upgrade. I mainly want the PC to stay current as newer games become more demanding.
A monitor upgrade should be chosen around the graphics card you actually plan to keep. With a 3060 Ti, a good 1080p high-refresh display or a reasonably priced 1440p monitor makes more sense than buying an expensive 4K screen. Set your monitor budget first—around $500 gives you several solid options—and avoid spending on resolution or refresh rate that the rest of the system can’t consistently drive.
I’m definitely planning to replace the monitor, but I’d prefer to keep the 3060 Ti for now rather than replace everything at once.
