Which beginner-friendly Linux distribution is best for gaming and a Windows-like desktop?

I'm planning to replace Windows 10 with Linux, but I'm still fairly new to Linux. I used Ubuntu briefly for school and have even less experience with Linux servers, so I'd like something beginner-friendly and difficult to break while I learn.

I'd prefer a desktop that feels familiar to Windows 10 and would like to avoid Ubuntu if possible. I'm considering Fedora KDE and Linux Mint, although I've heard Mint's software can be older. Gaming is also important: I want Steam games such as Cyberpunk 2077 and Stardew Valley to run well. Polish-language support is required as well.

What distributions and desktop environments would you recommend? I'd also appreciate beginner resources and advice before switching. I can't set up a dual-boot system because I don't have enough storage, so I'll need to reinstall Windows and use Linux as my main system from the start.

CachyOS is another gaming-focused option and can offer very recent drivers and software. However, it is based on Arch and uses a rolling-release model, so it is less predictable and less forgiving when you are still learning. I’d choose Mint or Fedora KDE first unless you specifically want to learn Arch-style system management.

Fedora KDE is a reasonable choice if you want newer software and a Windows-like interface. KDE Plasma is highly customizable and should feel familiar. It may require a little more learning than Mint, especially when troubleshooting drivers or installing software, but it is still approachable for a beginner. Check that your graphics hardware and favorite games are supported before committing.

Linux Mint with the Cinnamon desktop is probably the safest starting point. Cinnamon is familiar to Windows users, the system is straightforward to maintain, Polish language support is available, and Steam gaming generally works well. Its packages may not always be the newest, but that usually doesn’t make a major difference for gaming. Make sure to back up your personal files before reinstalling.

If gaming is the main priority, Bazzite is worth looking at. It is designed around a smooth gaming experience and includes useful tools for Steam and game launchers. The interface can be configured to resemble Windows, though its system design is a little different from traditional distributions, so it may take some adjustment.

Kubuntu provides the KDE desktop with Ubuntu’s underlying software and documentation. It is familiar and easy to install, but if you specifically want to move away from Ubuntu, Fedora KDE may be a better fit. Before reinstalling, read the official documentation for your chosen distribution, verify Polish localization during installation, check your GPU drivers, and keep a separate backup of anything important.
