I recently moved to another country for work and currently only have access to a company computer at the office. During breaks or quiet periods, I sometimes want to handle personal tasks, watch family videos, or catch up on games. I do not save files directly on the computer; I use an external drive and occasionally open WhatsApp to view photos and videos. Since using a phone at work is discouraged, I am wondering how much activity the company can monitor and whether there is any reasonably safe way to use the computer for personal activities until I can buy a laptop in a few months.

Using an external drive does not make the activity private. The computer can still record that the drive was connected, which programs opened files, and what network services you accessed. Personal files and accounts also create privacy and security risks, especially if browser passwords or sync features are involved. Keep personal data on a personal device rather than trying to work around the company’s restrictions.
The safest assumption is that anything you do on company equipment or the office network can be logged or reviewed. That does not mean someone is watching every second, but IT may be able to access browser history, network activity, login times, and files during an investigation. If the activity violates company policy, it could become a disciplinary issue. I would wait until you have a personal device.
Check the company’s acceptable-use policy if you want to know what is officially allowed, but do not treat the absence of obvious monitoring software as proof that you are safe. Network logs, endpoint security tools, backups, and access records may all exist without being visible to you. Even if the company rarely checks, the risk is not worth using the machine for videos, games, personal accounts, or files. Ask whether short personal use during breaks is permitted, or use your phone or another personal device instead.
I understand. I have normally kept a separate personal computer, but moving abroad for work has made that difficult. I will try to get a laptop sooner and avoid using the work computer for personal tasks in the meantime.
