I built this PC nearly six years ago and mainly use it for gaming. It still performs reasonably well, but I'd like to give it a worthwhile refresh with a budget of around $500. My current system has a Ryzen 7 3700X, RTX 3070, 32 GB of DDR4-3200 memory, an X570 motherboard, a 750W power supply, and a 1440p 170Hz monitor. The main storage is a 2TB NVMe SSD, along with a smaller NVMe drive and a 2TB hard drive. What upgrade would provide the biggest improvement for gaming?

The system is still pretty solid, and the most sensible upgrade on this platform would be the CPU. A Ryzen 7 5700X3D is usually the best value gaming upgrade for AM4 and should provide a noticeable boost in CPU-limited games. The 5800X3D is faster, but it often costs enough more that the 5700X3D makes more sense. You already have 32GB of RAM, so upgrading memory shouldn’t be a priority.
Before spending the money, figure out whether there’s a specific game or performance problem you’re trying to solve. At 1440p, the RTX 3070 may still be the limiting component in newer AAA games, while the 3700X could be the issue in high-refresh or CPU-heavy titles. A $500 GPU upgrade may not be a huge jump right now, so saving for a more substantial graphics-card upgrade could be better. If you want a noticeable change without replacing core components, a 27-inch or 32-inch OLED display could also be a worthwhile upgrade, though ultrawide gaming would put more pressure on the RTX 3070.
A good 27-inch monitor can cost roughly $300–$400, so that could use most of the budget while still feeling like a major upgrade. Otherwise, I’d save until you can afford a graphics card that offers a clearly larger performance increase.
