My dad became seriously ill and is currently unable to communicate. Before that happened, he wrote down his Apple Account login, but I never learned the passcode for his iPhone. Two-factor authentication sends the verification code to the locked phone, so I can't finish signing in elsewhere. The phone contains irreplaceable family photos, and I'm desperate to recover them. Is there any legitimate way to access the photos or restore them from an iCloud backup without knowing the device passcode?

Unfortunately, an iPhone’s passcode can’t be bypassed to access the data stored on the device. Apple generally can’t unlock the phone or extract its contents. Erasing it may let you set it up again, but anything that wasn’t backed up could be lost. If your dad had set up a Legacy Contact or another authorized recovery option, that may help with his account after providing the required documentation.
Before doing anything that erases the phone, check whether the photos and other data were already syncing to iCloud or included in an iCloud backup. Apple Support may be able to explain the account-recovery process and what documentation is needed, but having the Apple Account password alone doesn’t bypass two-factor authentication or unlock the device.
There may still be some hope if a recent backup exists. Apple Support indicated that the phone could be erased and then restored by signing back into the Apple Account, but this will only recover whatever was actually included in the backup or synced to iCloud. Make sure you understand what will be erased before proceeding, especially if the photos might exist only on the phone.
I spoke with Apple Support, and they said I could erase the phone and then sign back in to restore the available backup. The phone showed that a fairly recent backup existed, so I’m hoping the photos were included. I’m relieved there may still be a way to recover at least some of them.
