I'm not very experienced with PC building and currently use a roughly 10-year-old laptop with a broken screen connected to an external monitor. Its fans are getting loud and performance is starting to decline. The laptop has an Intel Core i5-7300HQ, a GTX 1050, Intel integrated graphics, 48 GB of DDR4 RAM consisting of one 16 GB Kingston ValueRAM SO-DIMM and one 32 GB stick, plus a 200 GB 2.5-inch SATA SSD and a 1 TB 2.5-inch 5400 RPM SATA hard drive.
I'd like to build or buy an inexpensive desktop mainly for 1080p gaming at 60 FPS on medium settings, with longevity as a priority. I don't care about appearance, and I'm willing to consider used parts or increase my budget if needed. Could I reuse the laptop's SO-DIMM memory with adapters and reuse both storage drives? Would that be reliable and cost-effective, or would I be better off selling the laptop and starting with a normal desktop build?

The adapters aren’t automatically unusable. They should work with a DDR4 motherboard, such as a Ryzen 5000 system or an Intel 12th-, 13th-, or 14th-generation processor paired with a DDR4 board. The main risks are inconsistent compatibility, reduced memory speeds, and difficulty enabling high-speed memory profiles. If the system is stable at its default settings, the performance difference may be fairly small, but buying standard desktop DIMMs is usually safer and easier.
Both SATA drives can be reused in a desktop as long as the case has suitable mounting options or you use inexpensive brackets. The SSD is useful for the operating system and games, while the old 5400 RPM hard drive is best reserved for bulk storage. Neither drive will make a new PC faster, and the hard drive should be checked for health before trusting it with important data.
SO-DIMM-to-DIMM adapters can work with a compatible DDR4 desktop motherboard, but they’re not usually the best choice for a gaming build. Compatibility and stability can vary, and laptop memory often has less flexibility for higher speeds or XMP profiles. You may also lose some performance if the memory has to run at conservative settings. The 48 GB capacity should be more than enough for Overwatch, though capacity itself isn’t the main concern here.
A used office desktop with a 10th-generation Core i5 and a graphics card such as a GTX 1660 Ti could be a much simpler 1080p starting point, provided the power supply, case airflow, and upgrade options are suitable. You could then upgrade the graphics card later.
I mostly play Overwatch, and the current laptop manages about 60 FPS at minimum settings without stuttering. I’m still unsure why the adapters are considered a problem—would the reliability or performance loss be significant enough that I should sell the laptop and start over?

The laptop currently uses only around 25–30% of the available RAM, although the CPU is often maxed out. I assume 48 GB would be plenty, but I’m wondering how much performance I might lose by using adapters instead of regular desktop memory.
