Do I Need a New CPU or PSU to Upgrade from an RTX 3050 to an RTX 3080?

I have a prebuilt PC with an OEM Nvidia RTX 3050 8GB, an Intel Core i5-12400F, 48GB of DDR4 memory, two 1080p 60Hz monitors, and a listed 600W power supply. The power supply's brand and efficiency rating aren't shown in the original listing. I'm considering upgrading to an RTX 3080 and want to know whether the CPU, PSU, case cooling, or any other components also need to be replaced. I'm running Linux and prefer Nvidia for ray tracing and upscaling support.

The basic upgrade path is: keep the 12400F and memory, replace the unknown 600W PSU with a reliable 750W or 850W model, then confirm the GPU’s length, thickness, power connectors, and case ventilation. If you are buying a used 3080, also check its condition and power requirements because different models vary considerably.

I’d strongly recommend upgrading the PSU. RTX 3080 cards can draw over 300W and produce short power spikes, while generic prebuilt PSUs may lack enough headroom or the proper PCIe power connectors. Look for a quality 750W unit at minimum, or 850W if the price difference is small. Use separate PCIe power cables where the card requires them.

Also verify that the card physically fits in the case and that the case has adequate airflow. The 3080 is much larger and hotter than an OEM RTX 3050. Your 48GB of RAM is already plenty for gaming, so that does not need to change. Nvidia can work on Linux, though driver behavior and feature support may vary depending on your distribution and setup.

The i5-12400F should be fine with an RTX 3080, especially for a 60Hz target. At 1080p, some games may become CPU-limited, but there’s no need to replace the processor right away. The 600W prebuilt power supply is the bigger concern. Check the label inside the case, and if it’s an unknown OEM unit, replace it with a reputable 750W or 850W model before installing the card.

The extra GPU performance can still be useful at 1080p through supersampling or higher rendering resolutions, but a higher-refresh or higher-resolution monitor would let the 3080 provide a more noticeable improvement.
