Do I Need to Eject a USB Keyboard or Mouse Before Unplugging It?

I'm using Windows 11 and can't find an eject option for my USB keyboard or mouse. When I unplug one, Windows plays a notification sound, which makes me wonder whether I'm disconnecting it incorrectly. Do keyboards and mice need to be safely ejected first, and what could happen if I unplug them without doing so?

The main risk with abruptly removing a USB device is a storage device being disconnected during a write. That can leave a file incomplete or, in rare cases, damage the file system. For a keyboard, mouse, or other non-storage peripheral, unplugging it normally doesn’t cause data corruption.

No. Ejecting is intended for removable storage, such as USB flash drives and external hard disks, because the computer may still be writing data to them. Keyboards and mice don’t store files, so there’s nothing to flush or safely close before unplugging them.

Modern Windows installations generally use safer defaults for removable storage than they used to, but ejecting storage is still a sensible precaution whenever files may be transferring.

The sound is just Windows notifying you that a USB device was disconnected; it isn’t a warning that something went wrong. You can unplug a keyboard or mouse whenever you need to, although you’ll naturally lose input until it’s connected again.
