I'm upgrading my Ryzen 7 2700X to a Ryzen 7 5800X3D on an ASUS TUF B450-PLUS GAMING motherboard. Before removing the cooler, I realized the motherboard might need a BIOS update for Ryzen 5000 or the 5800X3D. How can I check whether my current BIOS supports the new CPU, and is there anything else I should do before installing it?

Check your current BIOS version in Windows by pressing Win+R, entering msinfo32, and looking under BIOS Version/Date. Then compare that version with ASUS’s CPU support list and BIOS release notes for your exact motherboard. If your version doesn’t support the 5800X3D, update the BIOS while the 2700X is still installed. Using the latest stable, non-beta BIOS is generally the safest choice.
Be careful when removing the old cooler. AM4 thermal paste can bond the cooler to the CPU and pull the chip out of its socket. Warm the system first with a short workload, shut it down, release the cooler, and gently twist it side to side instead of pulling straight up. After installing the 5800X3D, load the BIOS defaults, confirm the CPU is detected, and then re-enable any settings such as your memory profile.
You’ll very likely need a BIOS update if the board’s firmware predates Ryzen 5000 support. Do the update before swapping CPUs, and make sure the computer won’t lose power during the process. Chipset and motherboard driver updates are also worth checking afterward, but there usually isn’t anything else special required for the CPU installation.
When I started the BIOS update, Windows reminded me to have a BitLocker recovery key, but my drive shows as unencrypted. Is that warning shown automatically? If BitLocker is definitely disabled, should a BIOS update be unable to trigger a recovery-key prompt?
You can also check directly inside the BIOS setup. The release notes may mention when Ryzen 5000 or specifically the 5800X3D was added.
