How can I access files from an SSD that still has my old operating system?

My laptop stopped working, and I'm planning to build a new desktop soon. The laptop's SSD contains important confidential files, but I currently don't have a working system to access them. Can I install the SSD in the new PC as a secondary drive and copy the files over, or should I use another method?

Yes, you can connect the SSD internally in the new computer and access it as an additional drive. Once the new system starts, copy the files you need to another drive. You could also place the SSD in a USB enclosure if you’d rather connect it externally.

If you want to preserve everything exactly as it is, make a clone or full image of the SSD before changing anything. After your important files are backed up, you can format the old drive and reuse it for storage if needed.

One important catch is encryption. If the laptop used a newer Windows installation and was linked to a Microsoft account, BitLocker may have been enabled automatically. You’ll need the recovery key to unlock the drive; check your Microsoft account’s saved recovery keys before assuming the SSD is inaccessible.
