I'm using Fedora Workstation 44 on a laptop with Intel Iris Xe graphics (Core i5-1135G7) connected to an AOC Q27G4XMN mini-LED HDR monitor. HDR is enabled both in the monitor's on-screen settings and in Fedora's display settings, but HDR content still does not look right.
In Firefox, I enabled several Wayland, WebRender, and VA-API preferences, but 4K HDR YouTube videos do not appear to be playing in HDR. YouTube's statistics show VP9/Opus with BT.709 colors instead. I also tried VLC and Celluloid from Flathub. In Celluloid I configured gpu-next with Vulkan and VA-API hardware decoding, but HDR10 files look very dark and washed out.
Is there a specific combination of display connection, desktop environment, browser, or media-player settings needed for HDR on Linux? Or is HDR support still too incomplete for this setup?

First check the connection between the laptop and monitor. DisplayPort is generally the safer choice for HDR. If you’re using HDMI, make sure both the port and cable support the bandwidth required by the monitor’s resolution and refresh rate.
Firefox HDR support is still a work in progress, so those preferences may not be enough. You could test the same YouTube video in Chromium or Chrome to rule out a Firefox-specific limitation. Also check the video’s statistics: BT.709 indicates SDR output, so the browser may not actually be delivering HDR even if the source is labeled HDR.
HDR support exists on Linux, but it depends heavily on the desktop environment and the application. KDE tends to have more mature HDR handling, while support in GNOME, browsers, and media players is still developing. Enabling HDR in the display panel alone doesn’t guarantee that every application will use it.
For local HDR files, try testing with mpv directly rather than through Celluloid. Celluloid is only a frontend, and mpv exposes more of the relevant rendering options. VLC and browser playback can vary by codec and may not handle HDR correctly in every case.
