How can I make sure my laptop is completely powered off after spilling juice on it?

I spilled apple juice on my laptop and pressed the power button right away, but I'm not sure whether it shut down or only entered sleep mode. The main power light is off, although another indicator light near the side is still on. How can I completely turn it off without powering it back on?

You can usually force a shutdown by holding the power button for around 10–15 seconds, but after a liquid spill it’s safer not to press anything unnecessarily. Leave it unplugged, don’t try to drain the battery by using it, and get it opened and cleaned as soon as possible because juice can cause corrosion even after the laptop dries.

A slowly blinking power light usually indicates sleep, while no main power light may mean it is already off. However, some laptops still draw a small amount of power in standby, so unplug the charger and avoid turning it on again. If you’re comfortable doing so, disconnecting the internal battery is the most certain option; otherwise, have a technician handle it.
