How can I safely straighten bent CPU socket pins?

I bent several pins while installing a new CPU fan, and trying to straighten them with a small flathead screwdriver only pushed nearby pins out of alignment. I can't afford to replace the motherboard, and a credit card seems too thick to fit between the pins. What tools and method should I use to repair them without causing more damage?

A mechanical pencil with the lead removed can sometimes fit over an individual pin and help nudge it back into place. A thin sewing needle or safety pin can work similarly, but keep the movements extremely small and avoid dragging across neighboring pins.

I don’t have a mechanical pencil, but I may try a razor blade. The small screwdriver only made the surrounding pins worse, so I’ll be very careful.

Use strong lighting and magnification, then make tiny adjustments with a very fine needle, sewing needle, or razor blade. Work slowly and move one pin at a time until it matches the angle and spacing of the surrounding pins. Don’t force anything, since socket pins can snap off easily.

Don’t bend the other pins to match. First take a close-up photo so you can compare the damaged area with an undamaged section, and avoid turning the computer on until every pin is aligned. If several pins are badly bent, a local computer repair shop may be safer and cheaper than replacing the motherboard.
