I bought a new laptop with Windows 11 preinstalled, but I don't plan to use Windows and want to install Linux instead. I'm currently stuck at the Microsoft account sign-in screen and can't find a shutdown option. Holding the power button briefly hasn't done anything, and a few keyboard shortcuts didn't work either. I'm completely new to computers and would rather not sign in just to turn the machine off. Is there another way to shut it down, or should I let the battery drain?

You can also try Ctrl+Alt+Delete. Depending on the laptop and Windows configuration, the resulting screen may include a power icon in the lower-right corner. If that doesn’t appear, the extended power-button hold is the practical fallback.
On a laptop, connect the power adapter if needed, then press and hold the physical power button continuously for about 30 seconds. Don’t release it when the display turns black—keep holding until the laptop fully powers off. This is a forced shutdown, so it isn’t the preferred method for normal use, but it’s appropriate when you’re stuck at the sign-in screen.
